Meet artist Chris Nixon - what's the inspo for this cup design?

I’m chasing west coast summer vibes with sunsets over the ocean. Looking for a surreal hazy landscape with bold abstract forms and patterns drawn from nature.

Q & A with the artist

Can you tell us a bit about your typical creative process?

I like to work to a narrative so I often begin with the written word, putting down some thoughts and key words that can inspire and drive my thought process. From there I’ll play with a few forms, patterns and textures with markers and ink that can then be collated digitally. My process pretty much stays consistent across my large murals and art installations, only the execution and outcome change which keeps it fresh.

Can you tell us a little bit about your background and how you ended up doing what you do?

I’ve always wanted to do something creative and I naturally gravitated to art, studying and developing my skills through school then I generally fell into picture books and illustration. I then combined my interests outside my work with my work and it all lined up. I love what I do and I feel super grateful every day for it.

What’s been a highlight of your career so far?

It’s been a winding journey across a wide range of projects, which has lead to a lot of collaborations with some really talented and great people and brands. A recent highlight was playing hoops on my latest basketball court I painted in Perth, which was a huge install but worth the sweat when I was playing on it with my son.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to any aspiring creatives?

Work hard, meet people and be ready to commit to grab opportunities when they arrive. Most of all though, enjoy the process - it never ends.
